URINARY CALCULUS IN AYURVEDA SAMHITHAS

Urinary calculus is called Mutrashmari in Ayurveda. Detailed description about the types, features and treatment of this disease is explained in various Ayurveda Samhithas. The important one's are discussed here.


SUSRUTHA SAMHITHA   

In the third chapter of Susrutha samhitha , Nidana sthana – Asmari Nidana , the diagnosis of urinary calculi is explained . The types of asmari, samprapti, purvarupa, rupa of asmari is explained. The diagnosis of kaphaja asmari, pittaja asmari, vataja asmari, sukra asmari and mutra sarkara are explained in detailed. In the seventh chapter of Susrutha samhitha , Chikitsa sthana- Asmari Chikitsa- the treatment of urinary calculi is explained. The different modes of treatment of asmari is explained. Different formulations like Pashanbhedi ghrta , Kusadi ghrta, Varunakadi ghrta etc are explained. When the asmari does not get reduced by the use of medicines, surgical operation is recommended. The chedana vidhi for asmari chikitsa is explained.

CARAKA SAMHITHA 

In 26th chapter of Caraka samhitha , Chikitsa sthana- Trimarmiya chikitsa, Asmari is explained. The chapter deals with the treatment of the afflictions of the three vital organs , marmans, ie, the head, urinary bladder and heart. Asmari is explained in the context of mutrakrchra (dysuria). The treatment of dysuria caused by asmari and sarkara is explained in this chapter. Formulations like Pashanabhedi kwatha, Pashanabhedadi ghrta, Trutyadi churna etc are explained in this context. 

ASHTANGA HRIDAYAM 

In 9th chapter of Ashtanga hridaya, Nidana sthana –Mutraghata nidana, asmari is explained. In this chapter the premonitory symptoms, clinical features and three types of asmari are explained in detail. Sukrasmari and sarkara are also explained in this chapter.
The 11th chapter of Ashtanga hridaya , Chikitsa sthana- Mutraghata chikitsa , the treatment of asmari is explained. In this chapter the treatment of vataja samari, pittaja asmari, kaphaja asmari , mutrasarkara and sukrasmari is explained . If the treatment of asmari by using these medicines does not find much use, then physician should then resort to the use of sharp instruments appropriately.
